class="entry-summary">
Williams’ second fumbled punt of the game set up Lawrence Tynes’ 31-yard field goal in overtime, and the 49ers lost the NFC championship game to the New York Giants 20-17 Sunday. Williams, returning kicks in place of the injured Ted Ginn Jr., muffed one punt early in the fourth quarter to set up a go-ahead touchdown for New York, then was stripped by Jacquian Williams in overtime to give the Giants the ball at the 24. After three runs and a kneeldown, Tynes kicked the game-winner, and Williams slowly made a dejected walk back to the locker room as the 49ers missed out on a prime chance to go to the Super Bowl. The 49ers tied an NFL record with just 10 giveaways all season — including none on special teams — and had a plus-28 turnover margin in the regular season. Williams, the son of Chicago White Sox general manager Ken Williams, did not look smooth fielding punts after doing it just twice in the regular season. Six plays later, Eli Manning threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham, who beat backup cornerback Tramaine Brock on third-and-15. Williams helped atone for his first miscue when he returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to help set up David Akers’ tying field goal late in regulation. San Francisco’s wide receivers had just one catch all game — a 3-yarder by Michael Crabtree on a third-and-5 play before Akers’ tying field goal with 5:39 left in regulation. John’s Ravens fell earlier in the day to New England 23-20 when Billy Cundiff pushed a 32-yard field goal attempt wide left in the closing seconds of the AFC title game.

Combined with a lack of snow and ice, the unseasonable conditions have been a blessing for many families who normally devote much of their budgets to natural gas, propane or heating oil. In Michigan, temperatures have been 15 percent above normal since October, and plentiful fuel supplies are driving down natural gas prices. Utility company Consumers Energy says its 1.7 million natural gas customers in Michigan are paying about 20 percent less than a year ago. Advocacy groups and government agencies agree the weather has been helpful — to a point. Demand for heating assistance remains high, they say, partly because so many Americans are unemployed or working at low-paying jobs. The grant I was provided will barely get me one fill of my propane tank,’ said Judd Schultz, housing director for Minnesota Valley Action Council, one of 28 nonprofit agencies through which the money is distributed. In Indianapolis, employment coach Janice Duffey of Southeast Community Services said she’s been flooded with calls for heating help and expects no letup anytime soon. The owner of an oil company in Scarborough, Maine, said heating oil usage among his customers dropped about 25 percent in November and 18 to 20 percent in December.

Joe Paterno’s death from lung cancer Sunday just two months after his firing left many Penn State students, alumni and community members numb with grief and a sense that the legendary coach deserved better from the university after such a distinguished career. On Sunday night, thousands of people, nearly all of them students, gathered outside Penn State’s administration building in a solemn candlelight vigil. The 45-minute vigil concluded with students singing the alma mater, and many were walking from the center of campus to pay additional tribute to Paterno at his statue outside of Beaver Stadium, which served as the site of another vigil the night before as news spread of his failing health. Paterno, who died at 85, was fired Nov. 9 by the Penn State trustees after he was criticized for not going to the police in 2002 when he was told that former assistant Jerry Sandusky had been seen molesting a boy in the showers at the football complex. Pennsylvania’s state police commissioner said the football coach may have met his legal duty but not his moral one. At an Iowa-Penn State wrestling match Sunday afternoon, a crowd of some 6,500 people gave a 30-second standing ovation as an image of Paterno appeared on two video boards. Andrea Mastro, an immunology professor who lives in the same neighborhood where Paterno lived and raised a family — with his address and number, famously, listed in the phone book — said the rapid spread of the cancer and the shadow of the Sandusky investigation made “the whole situation very sad.” Steve Wrath, a 1984 graduate, became emotional as he spoke outside the football stadium, in front of Paterno’s statue, which was adorned with lit candles, flowers, T-shirts and blue-and-white pom-poms.

<a

Lamb drove past Stokes to the basket and hit a layup to send the Huskies into halftime with a 27-25 lead. The Huskies missed their first five shots from the field after halftime. Napier hit a long jumper with 15:22 to play to end the drought, cutting Tennessee’s lead to 34-30. Stokes hit a free throw during the drought and finally sank a jumper with 9:55 to play, and the freshman went on to score a total of six points during a 2-minute stretch to help the Vols build their lead. Tennessee hit 7 of 10 free throws in the final minute to hold off the Huskies after having shot 42.3 percent. Tennessee had struggled with ball control in recent games and committed a season-high 20 turnovers in an overtime loss at Georgia on Wednesday. Martin had chosen Purdue over Calhoun’s Huskies out of high school, and as a sophomore logged 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal to help the Boilermakers grab a 73-69 win against them.

<a

The slim senior was a terror on defense as well with four steals and two blocked shots. It seemed every time that the Vikings needed a key play, all they had to do was turn to Walters and he would find a way to make a stop or get to the rim.

Walters, in fact, feels the whole team gets overlooked but if they keep playing the way they did against Warde, the Vikings will be dangerous as the season progresses.

“I feel I’m kind of underrated and not looked at as one of the best players,” Walters said. “But I just want to go out and help my team every night get a win.”

Westhill coach Howard White wants Walters to have patience as he continues to recover from an early season knee injury, but he understands he is the type of player that is hard to put a harness on. Walters just has the ability to take over a game, as does Dobbinson.

White thought Dobbinson had finally shown tonight the depth of his game as he tossed in 20 points and handed out five assists.

“Chris is the type of player and once you get those two players playing together they make everybody better,” said White. “Today was one of Tony’s better days. He’s been trying to take all the pressure on him and I told him he needed to take a step back and that’s what he did.”

Warde coach Ryan Swaller called Dobbinson a one-man fast break and had a goal coming in of containing the Westhill stars.

“I feel like a lot of our turnovers came off our inability to break their defense,” Swaller said. “We work on having a sense of urgency well before we are down by 15 or 20. We really wanted to slow down Walters and Dobbinson and we did, but then we got down and had to play man defense and played into what they do well.”

If anyone doubted Walters value to the team all you would have to do is see the sequence that occurred at the start of the second quarter. The Mustangs had grabbed a 13-11 lead while Walters was on the bench, but he forced a turnover and dropped in a trey to start a 23-9 outburst in the quarter, putting the Vikings in front for good. Walters had 10 points and two steals during the frame and led the Vikings to a 34-22 lead.

In the second half, senior center Sam Dorrisant (12 points) came alive scoring 10 points after intermission while Mark Edwin, Romario Narine and Yveson Cassamajor hit 3-pointers to help extend the Vikings advantage to as much as 24 points.

The Vikings saw the Mustangs whittle that lead down during a furious 32-point fourth quarter rally, but time was not on the visitors side.

White was less worried about his team’s defensive lapse in the late going and chalked it up to young players losing some focus. He would rather concentrate on what they did well to establish their lead, especially in the second and third quarters when the Vikings owned the court. White was looking for the team to bounce back with a win after a disappointing loss to Bridgeport Central in its last outing.

“We responded exactly the way I thought we would and the main thing right now is for us to come out with the fire and the intensity and we came out with that,” White said. “In the fourth quarter we got a little lazy but that’s okay because they had built that lead. We had a cushion and because of that we were able to relax a little and what I want them to understand is that once you build that lead you have to maintain it and that’s what they did.”

The Mustangs were led by Sal Siciliano with 20 points and seven rebounds while Mike Wright added 11 points and five boards. Warde is now 5-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

“We rebounded really well between Michael and Sal. We knew we would have to maintain or get an advantage there but we just didn’t get the easy buckets in the second and third quarters and everything we did miss went the other way really quickly,” said Swaller. “We were able to come back and show the fight we have but unfortunately it was a little too late because you’re not going to win being down 20 on the road against a team as good as this.”

Westhill is now 6-3 and 5-2 in the FCIAC. They have Brien McMahon on the schedule before a meeting with Stamford next Tuesday at the Westhill Gym.<br
